How will this help build Wisconsin Netroots?:

Why does the GOP continually wage war on women when the votes of women may well determine the outcome of the 2012 election cycle?  Why does this matter?  What can you do about it?

How will this help build Wisconsin Netroots?:
It's one of the most important issues facing us in Wisconsin this year, as the legislature continually passed anti-women legislation in the state.

J-School for Bloggers: Building a better blogosphere

The Cheddarsphere is strong! Blogs were on the front lines of the Wisconsin Uprising, oftentimes breaking stories and staying way ahead of the state and national media narratives - providing crucial, on-the-ground perspectives and news to a public hungry for real information. Blogs also provide crucial information about often ignored local issues and give voice to people and communities that might not otherwise get heard.

Still, it can be difficult to get your writing read by a wider audience, picked up by larger blogs/media outlets, and even taken seriously by more old-school, entrenched organizations. While some groups have started recognizing the importance of giving bloggers press credentials for big events, it's still sometimes difficult to get your foot in the door.

This training session will look to provide basic journalistic tools to bloggers to help bolster their already great work by:

  • Teaching standard AP style, and why it's important to use it/stick with it
  • Developing tools for representing yourself/your blog in a more professional light, forcing organizations to take you seriously as a media outlet
  • Research and fact-checking tools and skills
  • Basic article/post construction techniques to help you get your point across in a more clear, concise, readable manner
  • PR/Outreach techniques

This session will be very interactive, and can adapt to fit the individual needs of its attendees.

How will this help build Wisconsin Netroots?:
This training will contribute to building stronger blogs and bloggers, as well as community activists, by helping provide the tools to write stronger, more well-researched, clearly written pieces - and how to reach out to and build a bigger audience for those blogs and the community-based stories they tell.

Netroots Wisconsin has largely been my own project.  I'd like to change that.  This will be a discussion over the lunch hour about what we should do about Netroots Wisconsin in the future.  Bigger sponsors?  Ongoing discussions on-line?  Working groups on different topics? Informal get-togethers?  Or should we just go away and let corporate interests take over the state?

How will this help build Wisconsin Netroots?:
We need to make some decisions about whether this working group will continue, and if so, in what form?

A quick procession of people coming up to talk about what they're doing.  A maximum of 5 minutes per person. Discuss what you or your organization is doing, make a pitch for help, ideas, money - you name it. The concept here is to get out as many ideas as possible in a very short period of time, and to give people a chance to network with others.  This will happen near the end of the session, and people are very much welcome to retire to the bar in the same building to continue their "work".

We will also have a short closing and evaluation period.

How will this help build Wisconsin Netroots?:

How convenient --- the conference is in the same building as a bar and restaurant.  If you have the time, retire to the bar with your fellow Netsrooters, have a drink, and if you feel like it, have dinner.  This is not a formal part of the conference, but a chance to unwind and talk to the people you met during the day.
